The Czech Republic constitutes a crossroad of European cultures. It was created in 1993 by division of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic and joined the European Union in 2004. It is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. Although it has an area of 78,864 km², it ranks among the small countries. The Czech Republic is a global superpower in terms of its abundance of places of natural beauty and preserved cultural monuments. The country unites three historical regions (Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia), has 10.3 million inhabitants and is divided into 14 regional administration units managed by regional local governments.

 

The Czech Republic is a pluralist multi-party parliamentary representative democracy. The Prime Minister is the head of government. The Parliament has two chambers: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. It is also a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Council of Europe and the Visegrád Group. Since 2000, the Czech Republic is divided into 13 regions and the capital city of Prague.
